Happy New Year!

While 2020 has been tough in many ways, there have been some positive changes for injured workers which we hope are here to stay.

Injured workers in regional NSW have benefited from the increased use of telehealth for medical appointments and online arbitration hearings have saved many the long trek to the big smoke.

Working parents who have had to beg for flexible work arrangements in the past were finally given the opportunity to work from home and spend more time with their children.

This year we can expect some more changes streamlining services for people injured at work and in motor accidents in New South Wales.

From 1 March 2021 the Workers Compensation Independent Review Office (WIRO) will become the Independent Review Office and will expand their complaints handling service to deal with complaints from claimants about the acts or omissions of compulsory third-party (CTP) insurers arising under motor accidents legislation.

On that date the Workers Compensation Commission (WCC) will cease to exist and a new tribunal, the Personal Injury Commission (PIC) will take over the functions of the WCC, together with the Motor Accident dispute resolution services of SIRA.

The (PIC) will be a one stop shop for the statutory schemes with specialist workers compensation and motor accidents divisions.

The increasing move towards digital platforms will continue with the PIC expanding on the digital delivery of dispute resolution services.

Exciting times!
